Eid(?) in Palestine - by Dr Farrukh Anwar

I gave you a bath and put on new clothes, Took in the scent of mehndi on your fingers and toes, Decorated your hair with tiny, colourful clips and a big flower, Set a little handbag on your shoulders, a need of the hour And blew over you to protect from the evil eye, Hugged you, kissed you, "Happy eid, apple of my eye! " I turned around and froze, A scene from somewhere arose, Both legs plastered upto the thighs, Pellet riddled face and vacant eyes , The smell of dried blood welcomed me, She held close to her heart another baby, A sibling who had just breathed her last, Life had turned upside down in the few months past. " Mama, baba if only I could get a glimpse of you, alas! It would have been the best eidi for which I could ask! But no worries, I know Allah is with me, One day not far away, he will surely set us free!" I trembled, tears rolling down my face, I lost my composure, sanity and grace. So while you and I tweet and celebrate, Do send up a little prayer ...

Resurrecting Humanity: A Poetic Plea for Change by Sabiha Nehal Arzoo

Death of Humanity Last year humanity died, Many rejoiced, and very few cried. Blood-stained bodies all around, No safe haven on the ground. Love, joy, and peace snatched away, A deadly silence is left to stay. No water to drink, No food to eat. No children to hug, No families to greet. No mothers to dry the painful tears, No fathers to chase away the fears. No homes left to keep warm, No shelter to brace against the storm. No mourns are heard, No tears were shed. It clearly shows  Humanity is dead. Come forward, children of the world, You have to realise the reality. Lend your voice, show your strength, Together, resurrect the dead HUMANITY. Oh the 'just' people of the world! While you sleep, the bombs are hurled!! Echoes of screams as terrorism unfurled! Our abode destroyed while you remain unperturbed!! Many a homes can be seen on fire! Fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters all dressed in ruby attire!! Oh the 'just'  people of the world! While you sleep, 'human animals' we are referred!! Blood bath on every inch of our land! Resilient to the atrocities while we stand!! Oh the 'just' people of the world! Our newborns are butchered with you are not concerned!! Our land shakes and children cry! As they watch their brothers and fathers die! Oh the 'just' people of the world! While you surfeit, our throats go dry! My daughter under the rubble - she screams! Is it a reality my father, or just a dream!! Oh the 'just' people of the world! While you sleep in your couches undisturbed!! We die in valour and our children alike! Determined to the core as we fight!! Oh the 'just...

Contrasts of Existence: A Poem - 'Their Lives and Ours' by CA Faiz Anwar

Image
They wake up alarmed; we wake up to alarms. They realise they’re still alive; we enjoy our lives. They search for food; our fridges are stocked. They queue up for water; we refresh in showers. They’re grateful to get dry bread; we have an abundance. They starve; we feast. They’re scared; we live carefree. They strive to survive; we strive to prosper. They've nowhere to go; we have the entire world. Their belongings are just what they wear; ours are unending. They fear for their children's lives; we plan for our children’s lifetime. They sleep in the open; we relish the comfort of our homes. They shiver; we have warmth. Their nights are sleepless; we sleep throughout. They live in the ruins and dust; we can't stand the dust in our homes. They've lost hope; our dreams are boundless. They see only grey and red; we enjoy the beauty of rainbows. They count their   dead ; do we count our blessings? We bury our dead; UNDER RUBBLE, MANY OF THEM GET BURIED ALIVE! My appeal to yo...
